The extended Hoogterp tribe, loosely speaking, has had this web site at hoogterp.com for twenty years. Reach out if you want to post something here, we’d love it to be more inclusive and more than a streak of obituaries we’ve had lately!

Hello Everyone – Announcing Pratt Ventures and Mind Fusion X
Hello, this is Dan.
It’s been a while since anything’s been posted, so I thought I’d add some news from my life.
After ten years at Bankrate, Inc. as Senior Vice President and CTO, I decided to move on late last year. I left on good terms with great memories and many great relationships that will last a lifetime.
As part of my decision, I founded Pratt Ventures, LLC. Pratt Ventures makes investments in targeted opportunities, some as a lead investor, others as a minor investor where we can add value. So far, there is one minor investment (still confidential) and a startup (MindFusionX.com – pr. Mind Fusion X) well under way. With a small team, we’re exploring a few other opportunities that are still a ways down the road.
Mary Catherine Hoogterp, 1950-2013
Mary Catherine Hoogterp, 63, of San Diego, Cal., formerly of Grand Rapids, Mich., died Nov. 1 in San Diego. She leaves at home her husband, James Brewer, and two teen-age daughters, Marjorie RuiKe Brewer and Dorothea Fu-Yin Brewer.
Mary’s family will host a memorial Prayer Service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Comstock Park, with Deacon Jerry Roersma officiating.
Mary C. Hoogterp – 1950 – 2013 – Memorial Note from Colleagues
Our colleague Mary C. Hoogterp, Ph.D. has died, on 1 November 2013, from complications associated with leukemia, which was diagnosed in March. Mary served as an adjunct history instructor for over nineteen years, before being afflicted.
A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mary graduated from Ottawa Hills High School, in 1968. After a few years, Mary moved across the country to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she went to work for the Veterans Administration. Later she transferred to the VA office in Washington, DC, which allowed Mary to reside with her sister Ruth Ashley. When Ruth subsequently relocated to San Diego to start her own company, Mary was able to shift her VA employment to San Diego.
Francis Boyd Hoogterp, May 26, 1943 – October 15, 2012
Hoogterp, Francis Boyd (“Frank Hoogterp”) was called home to Jesus on October 15, 2012 after a long battle with brain cancer. Frank was born May 26, 1943 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Frank loved God and loved to share that love with others. He was a very intelligent man and took pride in learning. He received his PhD in systems engineering from Oakland University in 1984. He had a successful career working for the United States Government. Frank enjoyed running and ran many races, including several River Bank Runs. He continued running until his cancer diagnosis made it impossible to do so.
Pure Gospel by Benjamin F Hoogterp
We all come from a wide variety of relgious traditions and backgrounds, I know. This may not be on everyone’s Christmas shopping list, but I’m really excited about it. I had recently (last year) written a book on topics relating to the Bible, faith, and the gospel, and, while I had tried a few avenues of publishing, nothing seemed to work out. Then, someone pointed me to Amazon.com’s On-Demand publishing (CreateSpace, true on-demand publishing, with options to do it all yourself and no minimum book purchase required), and so I spent a while editing and revising, and finally have got it to “press”.
So, after quite a few years of writing and wanting to be published (this is not the first book I have written), I finally am able to have a normal, printed copy in my hand. Even more, because it is part of Amazon.com, it is listed on their own site! So, it’s still self-published, but it is published.
Reunion 2011
July 23, the fourth Saturday of the month, is the great Hoogterp Tribe reunion, when the extended family from around the country gather in the UP. As usual, the potluck dinner on Saturday evening and the pancake and leftovers breakfast on Sunday morning are the only scheduled events.
As the time gets closer, I’ll add information I happen to acquire about who is coming, who isn’t, and whatever. To get your info added, enter a comment or send me (Ruth) an email. You’ll be hearing from Jean about things as well.
Tips on Using This Site
Once you open Hoogterp Tribe you see the site but you are not logged in. At this point, you can read posts and read comments. To add a comment, you’ll have to login. and to login, you have to register.
If you Register, you’ll be able to LogIn. This has advantages. Just click Register, make up a username and enter a real email address. Within a minute or two, WordPress emails you an automatically generated password. You use this username and password to LogIn. Logging in gives you access to profile and other information.
- You will see your username in the upper left of the page. Clicking on it gives you access to the Profile and Dashboard and Logout.
- You can change the password in the Profile. This lets you have some possibility of remembering it next time.
- You can set a name for displaying, in case your username is something like “windblaster78” or “hoogterp54” so others will know you made a comment.
- You can change your email if necessary.
- You can add a touch of personal bio information. Remember this is the web so don’t give us too much information.
- You can post comments. We had to turn off anonymous posting — there were dozens of spam posts per day and none of us needs that kind of stuff.
The Walk – a tragic event
I don’t want to set the tone of this site to be one of grieving or loss.
However, that is a part of life and a large part of our family and tribe’s experience over the past couple of years. The site could not be a useful reflection of the tribe without mentioning the events of July 25, 2009.
A Hoogterp family reunion is held annually in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, near Gould City. This involves a diverse gathering, originally centered around Dorothy Hoogterp, but a large and diverse group, driven in large part by her open and inclusive nature.
As in many such gatherings, groups large and small will walk the local area to get exercise, see the beautiful scenery, and share conversation with others at the reunion. Having been on many such walks, I can attest that the groups are always mindful of where they are in relation to cars, walking toward traffic (to always be seen and see oncoming cars) and getting onto the shoulder as cars approach. There are usually kids along, so everyone is historically quite sensitive to the safety issues. In any walk I’ve ever been on in the evening, several people would have flashlights, easily seen from a long distance.
I am about to briefly describe a tragic event on one of these walks on July 25, 2009. I was at the reunion and had been on several similar walks that year. I wasn’t on this particular walk, mainly because I’d taken a long walk with one of my sisters just a few hours earlier. I was at the scene about ten minutes after the event.
